The puzzle directed solvers to a coding challenge: build an algorithm to serve as a digital bouncer for Berghain, the notoriously selective Berlin nightclub. Thousands attempted it. Four hundred thirty solved it. Several were hired, and the winner received an all-expenses-paid trip to Berlin.

In the short time since its launch, Listen Labs has grown annualized revenue 15x to eight figures and conducted more than one million AI-powered customer interviews. The company now employs a global panel of 30 million potential research participants.

Why Traditional Market Research Falls Short

Listen Labs aims to solve long-standing problems in the $140 billion market research industry. Companies have historically faced a binary choice: quantitative surveys that offer scale and statistical precision but lack nuance, or qualitative one-on-one interviews that deliver depth but are slow and expensive to conduct at volume.

Wahlforss argues surveys often produce "false precision" because respondents tend to give socially desirable answers and cannot easily express outliers or unexpected insights. Human interviews allow follow-up questions and verification but cannot scale effectively.

Listen's platform addresses both limitations. Users create a study with AI assistance, the system recruits qualified participants from its 30-million-person global network, an AI moderator conducts open-ended video interviews with dynamic follow-up questions, and the platform delivers executive-ready reports that include key themes, highlight reels and slide decks.

The emphasis on open-ended video conversations rather than multiple-choice formats generates greater honesty, particularly on sensitive topics such as politics or mental health. "People talk three times more. They're much more honest when they talk about sensitive topics," Wahlforss said.

Confronting Rampant Fraud in the Industry

A significant technical challenge has been combating fraud in online research panels. Wahlforss described discovering "one of the most shocking things" upon entering the market research sector: widespread submission of fake or low-quality responses, even from major corporations.

Listen Labs developed a "quality guard" system that cross-references LinkedIn profiles with video responses, checks answer consistency, and flags suspicious behavioral patterns. The results have been dramatic. Emeritus, an online education company, reported that roughly 20% of its previous survey responses were fraudulent or unusable. After switching to Listen Labs, the company said it "did not have to replace any responses because of fraud or gibberish information," according to Gabrielli Tiburi, Assistant Manager of Customer Insights at Emeritus.

Speed and Impact for Enterprise Customers

The ability to deliver insights in hours rather than weeks has become a central selling point. At Microsoft, traditional customer research often took four to six weeks, by which time key product decisions had frequently already been made, said Romani Patel, Senior Research Manager at Microsoft.

"By the time we get to them, either the decision has been made or we lose out on the opportunity to actually influence it," Patel explained. Microsoft and other customers, including Sweetgreen and Chubbies, now use Listen Labs to run global customer studies and incorporate real user perspectives earlier in the product development cycle.
